Coming soon to a rental lot near you as a “Full Size upgrade” option!
Only he 2019 Altima’s standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder using the variable compression-ratio technology first seen on Nissan luxury brand !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is also available with front-wheel drive only. This engine, badged VC-Turbo, can change its compression ratio on the fly, switching from a performance-oriented 8:1, to a more fuel efficient 14:1. It also produces 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission.
. The all-wheel-drive system mentioned above is only being offered with the 2.5-liter engine. The system normally splits torque 50:50 but if needed can send up to 100 percent of the torque to the front wheels. Hmmmmm

Both engines are mated to Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission.
Wake me up when that transmission dies a quick, painful death.
Until then, may they remain on rental car lots and with dealers who advertise that they will “finance anyone”.

Why would they offer AWD only with the base engine? That makes no sense. Most companies do it the other way around and offer it only with the big engine.

Because they don’t give a shit. It’s a half-hearted attempt to stay relevant. If you wanted a good AWD midsize you’d go for the Legacy or Fusion anyway.

I haven’t driven one in a while, but last time I did: There is a special place in hell for the team that designed, approved, marketed, and put into production that fucking CVT. I elected to rent a Mitsubishi Mirage (quite possibly the worst car in the US) over a Nissan because of the possibility the Nissan might have had the CVT.

I think we’ve had a very similar experience. Worst rental car I’ve EVER driven, and yes that includes the previous-gen Corolla and some chevy hatchback which I don’t even remember the name of. I chose a lower tier Ford Focus instead the next time I was offered one.

Odd, I rented a recent one that has the dual ratio planetary gear that allows kickdown and thought it was pretty good. Oh well, call me different.
